Sarah A. Hamilton, Ph.D.

I am a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst with a private practice in Northampton, Massachusetts where I see clients both in person and online. I am also able to work remotely with clients in New York state.

I believe that the things we feel and how we make sense of them can change dramatically over time. You may find yourself having new feelings about something that happened a long time ago; wanting to more deeply engage with an experience you have been carrying for many years; or struggling to adapt to a new circumstance in your life. We can sometimes get stuck relying on the solutions we developed to cope in earlier parts of our lives in ways that are no longer working well for us. In my work, I seek to support you in learning about your experiences, responses, and needs in a way that fosters growth and a greater understanding of yourself.

I think of therapy as an exploration we are embarking on together. I believe you are the expert in your own experience and will follow your lead about what feels important. Through listening, asking questions, linking, and highlighting, I seek to help us make connections and move deeper into your experience. I will also attend to the context around you, the social, relational, and family dynamics you find yourself a part of and how this affects you. My job is not to give you advice or my thoughts on your experience, but to encourage you to continue unfolding your own experience and, through this, to come to new understandings about your life and the meaning you make of it.

Therapy is unlike any other setting or relationship in our lives. This is a space entirely for you, with a focus on your unfiltered experience. Opening yourself up in a therapeutic relationship can feel daunting or scary, but you will not be alone in this process. By creating a safe and containing space, my goal is for you to feel that you have a companion on this journey, wherever it might take you.
